How Does Medicare Work for Seniors?
If you're helping a parent navigate Medicare for the first time, it can feel overwhelming. The good news? It breaks down into just a few clear pieces.
Medicare is health insurance for people age 65 and older (and some younger people with disabilities). It comes in parts, and each part covers something different. Once you know what each one does, the whole picture gets much easier.

When to Sign Up for Medicare: The Enrollment Timeline
Timing matters. Missing a deadline can mean lifelong late penalties — so it helps to mark the calendar.
Initial Enrollment Period: A 7-month window around your parent's 65th birthday — 3 months before, the birthday month, and 3 months after.
General Enrollment Period: January 1 to March 31 each year, for those who missed their first chance.
Open Enrollment: October 15 to December 7, when your parent can switch or change plans for the coming year.
Unsure which window applies to your parent? Call 1-800-MEDIGAP and we'll walk you through it.
